Zeigarnik Effect
The tendency to remember unfinished or interrupted tasks better than completed ones, which progress bars and checklists use to keep users engaged.
Why it matters
Unfinished tasks itch — the brain holds them open in a way completed ones never earn. Products monetize that itch constantly: the 80% complete profile bar, the one unchecked item, the streak about to break. It is legitimate when the task serves the user (finish setup, resume the course) and manipulative when the 'incomplete' state is manufactured to farm engagement — the honest test is whether finishing actually benefits them or you.
Feel it
That half-full bar is engineered to bother you. Finish the list and feel the effect switch off — then ask who the last item really served.
