Touch Target

The tappable area of an interactive element. Guidelines recommend at least around 44×44 pixels so it’s easy to hit with a finger.

Why it matters

A fingertip covers roughly 44px of screen. Below that, taps land beside the control as often as on it — and the person cannot tell whether they missed or the product ignored them.

The numbers

  • 44 x 44px — the comfortable minimum (Apple HIG)
  • 48 x 48dp — the Android equivalent
  • Padding counts — the hit area may exceed the visible box
