The empty area around and between elements. Not leftover room but an active tool — it groups what belongs together, separates what does not, and gives the eye somewhere to rest.

Why it matters

It is not the absence of design — it is the part doing the grouping, pacing and emphasis for free. Cramped screens are rarely short on space; they are short on the confidence to leave it empty.
