Use of navigation vs. Search

The number of people who use a website or app’s navigation compared to the number of people who use the search functionality

Why it matters

This ratio is a confession your users make about your information architecture. When search usage climbs, it often means browsing failed — people could not guess where you filed the thing, so they gave up and typed. Read it with care: on a ten-page product, heavy search is a warning; on a million-SKU store, it is simply how the product works.
