Why it matters

The blandest word in the field, and the most contested — critics note that only software and one other industry call their customers 'users.' The term earns its keep as a discipline: it keeps the focus on the person operating the product rather than the one paying for it, which are often different people with different needs. Just never let the abstraction flatten them into a segment; every 'user' is having one specific Tuesday.
