Breadcrumb
A row of links showing the user’s location within a site’s hierarchy, letting them see where they are and step back up the path.
Why it matters
It answers “where am I?” at a glance and gives deep-linked visitors — who never saw your homepage — a way up instead of out. Cheap to build, invisible when unneeded, and sorely missed the moment hierarchy gets three levels deep.
The component
Every step up is a link — except where you already are. The current page never links to itself.
The numbers
- 3+ levels — the depth at which breadcrumbs start earning their keep
