Time On Task

The amount of time it takes for a user to complete a task

Why it matters

It is the rare metric where the goal is honest: shorter is almost always better, because nobody wants to spend more time paying an invoice. Its power is in comparison — before versus after a redesign, your flow versus a competitor's — not in the absolute number. The one trap: for content and exploration, longer can mean engaged, not lost; know which kind of task you are timing before you celebrate a drop.
